Top Spot in Sight for Deeside

In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, undefeated Flint Phoenix are leading the way in top position, followed by Deeside, with Rossett A lurking in third place.

Surprise package Deeside, took on visitors Mold A and in a tight match separated by only six points in Mold’s favour, secured a 4-4 draw. The improving and talented Liam Hird was stand out player for Mold and at first mixed together with Jo Thomas, they comfortably overcame Cerys Brackenbury and Luke McLaughlin by 21/11 and 21/7.

Flint Phoenix A entertained Denbigh A and in a friendly but competitive match, ran out 6-2 winners. Andy Gibbons and Dave Carnelly starred for Flint and in their second men’s doubles they beat Richard Elston and Wayne Cooper, in comfortable fashion, 21/7 and 21/11.

Mold B head Division 2 just ahead of Buckley with Hawarden third. Promotion favourites Eros lie in wait near the bottom, having played just a single, but winning match.

Mold B won 7-1 in their fixture at home against Llanferres B, with only one match going to three games. First mixed is where Llanferres picked up their event when with Andy Swash in sublime form and aided by Angela Yau, eased their way to a three game win over Louise Nesbitt and Lloyd Tranter, 21/16, 19/21 and 21/17.

Rampant Prestatyn are way out in front in Division 3 with 44 points, followed by Llanferres C on 15 points and Mold C third with 13 points.

There was another strong performance by Prestatyn A and their fifth straight win, this time by defeating their B team 7-1. At first ladies Michaela Lawton and Ruth Salisbury secured the B team’s solitary win when they got the better of previously unbeaten Sonia Penlington and Caitlin Dolan, 21/14, 21/14, in a thrilling and entertaining match, full of powerful hitting and lengthy rallies.
