THE NEWBA Senior County Team played their first matches in the Badminton England Senior County Championships.
After just missing out on promotion last season, the team were hoping to get a good start to this campaign. With a few key players missing due to injury or tied up in other NEWBA events, the team managed by Heather Astley and made up of Jamie Noble, Stuart Mears, James Hulley, Owain Astley, for the men and Jess Ding, Ellen Liddle, Jess markey and Fiona Reid for the ladies, would have to play their best badminton to give NEWBA the best start for the promotion race.
The first match was against Shropshire 3 where Jamie Noble overcame tough opposition to win the 1st singles match 21/12, 22/24, 21/19. Great start!!! After the singles events NEWBA were up 3-2, with great wins for Jess Markey and Jess DIng.
From then on NEWBA dominated the doubles events only dropping one match in the ladies doubles, with a notable performance from Owain and Fiona to beat their opponents in two sets, 21/12, 21/19.
NEWBA win 8-3. Perfect Start!!!
Next up were one of the favourites for promotion next season, Staffordshire 2. This was a much tougher affair, and NEWBA found themselves down 1-4 after the singles events.
After that Staffordshire shown why they were tipped for promotion by dominating all the doubles events, with only Ellen Liddle and Jamie Noble salvaging a valuable point in the mixed doubles, from the remaining six games.
Despite digging in and fighting for every point NEWBA ended up losing out 2 -9.
The next matches will be played on the 26th January 2019, where they will be up against Herefordshire and Berkshire 2.
