Flint Phoenix A continued their winning run in Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, with a comfortable 7-1 triumph away to Llanferres A. At third mixed the experienced husband and wife pairing of Jane and Dave Clough were Llanferres’ only winners; tactically too astute for Andy Gibbons and Zoe Moorcroft they played sublime badminton to win 21/15 and 22/20.
Rejuvenated Deeside hosted Denbigh A and in raising their game, defeated their visitors 6-2. Undefeated Steve Aylott was player of the match for Denbigh and together with partner Bev Dolman they overpowered Henry Carrington and Cerys Brackenbury, at first mixed, winning 21/9 and 21/18.
In Division 2, Hawarden’s run of wins came to a halt when they faced the firepower of Mold B and were trounced 7-1. At second ladies Lili Thomas and Elaine Pierce were in outstanding form and armed with good serving and strong smashes, demolished Hawarden’s Carol Hughes and Alison Hulley 21/9 and 21/7.
A well established team, Rossett B proved just too good on the night for Holywell A, wrapping up a fine 6-2 win. One of Rossett’s losses was at fourth mixed where Dave Lovatt and Marie Jones fought hard but struggled to cope with the pace of Nicky Garnett – Hughes and Anne Booth and with the home pair playing classic mixed tactics they ran out 21/19 and 21/9 winners.
Division 3 saw Mold C dig in and achieve an honourable 4-4 draw with the more established players forming the Llanferres C team. Undefeated, talented youngster James Maddocks was player of the match for Mold C and together with Chris Preston gave a disciplined performance, with some inspired net play from Preston, to defeat Gareth Davies and Sam Harrison 21/15 and 21/14.
With Dave Stretch continuing to provide experience and added strength to Flint C, the home team routed Prestatyn B 7-1. Prestatyn’s winning pair, Michaela Lawton and Ruth Salisbury, showed their staying power when they outlasted Catrin James and Gemma Browne to take the match by 16/21, 21/14 and 21/18.
