Prestatyn A Clinch Division 3 Title.

In the North East Wales Badminton League Division 1, arriving with their team short of players, Deeside’s visit to Mold A was always going to be an uphill struggle and so it was with the final result being an 8-0 whitewash in favour of Mold A. Playing at first ladies for Deeside, Laura Parry and Cerys Brackenbury fought hard but could not overcome Mold’s combination of youth and experience when they went down to Jo Thomas and Lily Hird in a three game thriller by 19/21, 21/18, 21/14.

Teetering on the brink of relegation, Flint Phoenix B lost out to visitors Denbigh A 6-2. At first men’s Flint’s Phil Roberts and Alex Graham showed what a formidable men’s pairing they have become when they combined to play near faultless men’s doubles to comfortably defeat Iain Lovatt and Steve Aylott 21/12, 21/13.

Undefeated Eros head Division 2 and it will be interesting to see how they successful they are when they take their rightful place in Division 1 next season. Mold B are clear favourites to also gain promotion, with Rossett B lying some distance behind in third position.

Hawarden travelled to Llanferres B and reversed the result of their previous encounter with taking the match 5-3. For his very sporting attitude, Dave Blenkley was adjudged player of the match for Hawarden; although in his second men’s event with partner Andy Steele there was little they could do to stem the tide of aggressive play from Mikey Parr and Howard Robinson who both played superbly, winning 21/9, 21/11.

In Division 3 Prestatyn A clinched promotion with a resounding 7-1 win over guests Mold C who were short of one player. At first ladies for Prestatyn, Sonia Penlington and Caitlin Dolan showed their class when they dug in and playing shrewd doubles tactics, with tight net play and powerful smashes, got the better of Gill Evans and Ros Hoo to take their event by a close 21/17, 21/19. Also vying for promotion in second place, Llanferres C and Denbigh B are level on points behind Prestatyn A but Llanferres C have two games in hand over their rivals.

Prestatyn’s C team could not replicate the success of their A team and went down 6-2 to visitors Flint C. Match of the evening was at second ladies where Prestatyn’s Gina Harris and Sheila Blackwell were involved in a three game marathon with Gemma Browne and Ro Spencer. With the visitors taking the first game 21/12, Harris and Blackwell fought back to take the second winning 21/14. The decider was a real battle with neither pair giving ground and the lead changing hands on a number occasions. However with onlookers enjoying the excellent standard of play it was the home pair that blinked first and with a couple of unforced errors giving the initiative to the visitors, the match went to Browne and Graham 28/26.
