Phoenix Battle it out in Home Derby

Matches between teams of the same club can often throw up some drama and interesting results. However in Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League’ Flint Phoenix’s A and B teams battled it out only for their A team to confirm its superiority, claiming the match 7-1. At first men’s, the B team’s pairing of Phil Roberts and Alex Graham caused something of an upset when they put the A team’s Matt Sprake and Jordan Donnelly firmly in their place, winning a hard fought match by 21/17, 19/21 and 21/16.

A lady player short, Llangollen were always going to be up against it and with the more experienced Rossett A as visitors, it was no surprise that they went down 6-2. Llangollen’s Jane Jones and Viv Davies, at first ladies, showed their superior fitness, when they outlasted Rachel Twiss and Toyoko Cornelius taking the event by 13/21, 21/15 and 24/22.

With just ten points separating the two teams there was little to choose between them when Mold A took on visitors Llanferres A. In a match of the highest quality the home team took the fixture 5-3. Mold’s Lloyd Tranter and Joe Nesbitt combined well at second men’s and raised their game to overcome the more experienced pairing of Dave Clough and Duncan Church to win by 21/16, 18/21 and 21/16.

Even at this early stage of the badminton season the powerful Eros team appear destined for promotion from Division 2 and visitors Rossett B were the latest casualties to suffer an 8-0 whitewash in their hands. Playing for the first time for Eros, undefeated Jenny Broughall was player of the match and along with partner Fiona Reid played superbly to beat Jo Sanderson and Marie Jones by 21/14 and 21/10.

In Division 3 Holywell B entertained Mold C and in what proved to be a very close match a 4-4 draw appeared to be a fair result, with the home team taking the bragging rights by eight points. Match of the evening was at first ladies when Holywell’s Linda Roberts and Elsie Gregory played sublime badminton to win a three game thriller against Paulina Matsko and Eve Ellis to win 16/21, 21/18 and 21/18.

Prestatyn A have been on a winning run and so it continued with the 8-0 annihilation of home team Denbigh B. For Denbigh only Emma Taylor and Mared Roberts came close to taking an event at second ladies, but during the three game encounter with Jane Hodgson and Claire Atmore they found the visitors playing inspired bdminton to close out the match by 19/21, 21/17 and 21/19.

Prestatyn A then travelled to Llanferres C and in a much closer fixture ran out 5-5 victors. Sam Harrison was player of the match for Llanferres and with partner Gareth Davies gave a dazzling display of doubles tactics to eventually outgun Steven Hodgson and Paul Armstrong by 15/21, 22/20 and 21/15.
