Mold Take the Honours in Top of the Table Clash

In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, champions elect Flint Phoenix A were given a tough time at home by second placed Mold A who rose to the occasion and went on to take the fixture 5-3. Mold’s outstanding John Savory and Lily Hird were involved in a thrilling three game marathon with David Carnelly and Jude Hughes, which was long in rallies and punctuated by heavy smashes, before clinching the win by 21/10, 19/21, 21/14.

Having to concede three events due to the absence of two men, Llangollen crashed to an 8-0 defeat in the hands of third placed Rossett A. Undefeated Nicola Smith was player of the match for Rossett and along with partner Christian Taylor, at first mixed, they proved too strong for Nik Evans ad Jane Jones, going on to win by 21/15, 21/13.

Extra practice and training is clearly paying off a bit late for Holywell A who have been languishing at the bottom of Division 2 for most of 2018/19. Travelling to Hawarden they surprised their hosts with a fine team effort culminating in a terrific 6-2 win – their first this season. Holywell’s Becky Saunders and Eryl Hooson upped their game and tactically more astute, outplayed the evergreen Roy Thompson partnered by Tonicha Gibson, taking their match by 21/17, 21/13.

Home team Mold B put up a fight against the all conquering Eros only to lose out 7-1. At first mixed the Eros County Team pairing of Ellen Liddle and Jamie Noble played superbly and it altogether proved too much for Emma Hilton and Lloyd Tranter, who despite their best efforts went down 9/21, 13/21.

In Division 3 it appears Holywell B are going to go through the season without a win and their latest fixture against near neighbours Flint Phoenix C proved to be an all too familiar tale, with Phoenix applying an 8-0 whitewash. Dafydd Davies and Gil Ashworth, playing at second men’s, came closest to achieving a win on behalf of Holywell when they took Graham Donnelley and Steven Davies to three games before errors crept into the deciding game, with them losing out by a close 21/23, 21/15, 16/21.
