Mold Take the Early Lead in the Junior League

This weekend saw the 2nd Round of the NEWBA Junior League. With 76 players turning out for their clubs across 5 Divisions throughout the day, it guaranteed a very busy, but exciting day of badminton.

Starting the day was Division 5. It was a tough day for Wrexham C and Llanferres B, as both teams faced very strong opposition from Buckley B and Connah’s Quay D. With both Connah’s Quay D and Buckley B winning their matches 6-0, the quest to find a group winner, which would normally go on points won and lost in this situation, was made impossible due to both teams being inseperable on points. This left only one solution, a coin toss!!! Buckley called heads….the coin was tossed….but unfortunately it was the wrong call, which meant that Connah’s Quay were promoted.

Division 4 was a little less complicated, but still provided the excitement with some evenly matched play, with 3 drawn matches and only Connah’s Quay C taking a 6-0 win over Christleton C, which guaranteed Connah’s Quay’s promotion.

In Division 3 Christleton A easily secured their promotion to Division 2 by beating their B team 6-0 and Flint B 5-1. Deeside battled for a win and a draw with Flint B and Christleton B, respectively, which put them in second place in the standings.

Newly promoted Mold C were missing from Division 2, which meant that the remaining three teams of Llanferres A, Buckley A and Connah’s Quay B were fighting for top spot. Connah’s Quay B took the early initiative with a convincing 6-0 win over Llanferres A. Next up it was Buckley A, who to keep their promotion hopes alive had to take the win over Llanferres, which they did in an nearly perfect 5-1 win. With a win a piece the Division was going to be decided on the winners of the match between Connah’s Quay and Buckley. It was a close one, but a 4-2 victory saw Connah’s Quay gaining promotion to Division 1.

Saving the best til last, Division 1 got under way, with Mold A taking on their home rivals Mold B. The match went to form and Mold A won 6-0. At the same time Connah’s Quay A were matching Mold A by beating Flint A with the same 6-0 scoreline. With a a win each the battle for the League’s top position was going to be decided in the next match. With such stakes on the line, the players brought their ‘A’ games and gave a dazzling display of badminton. Mold took the early lead winning their 1st singles, but Connah’s Quay evened the scoreline in 2nd singles match, from their Mold dominated the next 2 singles and 1st doubles making sure of the win, with a consolation for Connah’s Quay in the 2nd doubles. The result ended Mold A 4-2 winners and topping the League at this point of the competition. Mold B went on to defeat Flint A 4-2, which secured their position in Division 1.

Our next fixture is on November 24th 2018. We look forward to seeing you all there!!!
