Llangollen’s win consolidates their position and pushes Llanferres C closer to relegation.

The latest North East Wales Badminton League tables show Buckley based Eros comfortably heading Division 1 with 55 points followed by Flint Phoenix A on 35 points but with two matches in hand.

Bolstered by the inclusion of Welsh International star Dan Font, home team Mold A put up stiff resistance against top dogs Eros, but in a closely contested fixture were unable to match the strength in depth of the visitors and went down 3 – 5. Talented Font remained unbeaten but was taken all the way at first men’s, when with young partner Liam Hird, they were engaged in a long drawn out thriller against Will Toomey and Jamie Noble, before wrapping up the deciding game to win by 21/18, 15/21 and 21/16. Great entertainment.

Mold B were less fortunate than their A team when they hosted Denbigh A and with the visitors strengthened by the inclusion of Matty Vacher lost 2 – 6. Denbigh’s Beki Hutt and Bev Dolman raised their game at first ladies to outplay the experienced pairing of Emma Hilton and Trish Hird to take their event by 21/16 and 21/13.

Clear favourites for promotion from Division 2, Flint Phoenix B are out on their own with 56 points, followed by Buckley on 38.

As if to assert their authority, Phoenix B travelled to take on Prestatyn A and came away with a clear 7 – 1 win. At fourth mixed Bill Teece and Ruth Salisbury prevented the whitewash for Prestatyn when, with a masterclass of tactical acumen, they outfought and outplayed Chris and Catrin Travers, winning 21/13 and 21/16.

Llangollen are showing good form with consistency and deservedly lie third in the division. Llangollen’s joint players of the match, in their away fixture to Llanferres C, were the unbeaten second mixed pairing of Danielle Coxey and Owain Wright. In their match against Moira Bonar and Gareth Davies they played superbly and with tight serving and attacking play, outgunned their opposition to take the match easily by 21/10 and 21/11.

Surprise package, Holywell A, remain undefeated at the head of Division 3 with 43 points, Connah’s Quay in second place on 37 and struggling Holywell B propping up the League.

The local derby between Flint Phoenix C and guests Holywell B went, as expected, in favour of the home team 6 – 2. Undefeated Hilary Roberts was player of the match for Holywell C and at third mixed with partner John Speed produced some sublime touches at the net, to set up her partner for heavy smashes, that produced a fine 17/21, 21/15 and 21/18 win over Flint’s pairing of Matt and Kelly Pluck.

With four events going to the best of three games, this was a close match which just went 5 – 3 in favour of home team Denbigh B, over a determined young Mold C team marshalled by Chris Preston. And at second men’s it was the wily Preston, aided by strong hitting from Tom Lanceley, who set up the win over Denbigh’s Alun Hughes and Den Cottle, taking their match by 21/14 and 21/9.
