In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, Buckley based leaders Eros, just managed to scrape a 5 – 3 home win over close rivals Flint Phoenix A.
Match of the evening was at first mixed which saw the partnership of Beth Higginson and Jamie Noble give a dazzling display of attacking doubles play when they recovered from a game down to close out Sammy Hutt and Ben Travers in the deciding game to win by 12/21, 21/18 and 21/18.
The basement battle between home team Deeside and Mold B was settled as a 4 – 4 draw. Mold’s Joe Nesbitt and Trish Hird were in sparkling form and at second mixed comfortably accounted for the experienced Mike Cain and partner Sara Williams to triumph 21/10 and 21/12.
Division 2 leaders Buckley were given a reality check when they visited Flint Phoenix B and were soundly beaten 8 – 0. At first ladies the Moorcroft sisters, Zoe and Tara, were in particularly good form and playing badminton of the highest quality, wrapped up a fine 21/8, 21/10 win, in quick time, over Helen Evans and Charlotte Ince.
The long journey from the seaside to Llangollen didn’t seem to suit Prestatyn A who although beaten 6 – 2 by the home team, enjoyed a match, much closer than the score suggests, with three events going to a decider. Prestatyn’s Steve Hodgson and Bill Teece playing at second men’s dug deep in their three game battle with Zak Ball and Karl Young but their nervous unforced errors in the decider enabled the home pair to take the match by 21/10, 17/21 and 21/18.
The Division 3 mid table clash between home team Flint Phoenix C and Denbigh B, went the way of the visitors by a close 5 – 3, helped somewhat by Flint being a lady short. At third mixed Flint’s Matt and Kelly Pluck gave a vintage display of mixed doubles tactics when they outmanoeuvred Den Cottle and Caroline Parry, winning a tightly fought match 21/19 and 21/18.
The handicap Challenge Cup results were Holywell A (Scr) 11 v Prestatyn B (+5) 5 with the indefatigable David Davies player of the match for Holywell.
