Llanferres "Dream Team" too Strong for Holywell

In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, Flint Phoenix B and Llangollen are both finding the going tough and recent results confirm both will be struggling to maintain their divisional status by the end of the season.

Llangollen’s home fixture against Mold A went as expected, with a 7-1 win in favour of the visitors. For Llangollen at third mixed, Kim Yeap and Lynn Coxey came close to taking game when they put in a battling performance against Lloyd Tranter and Debbie Walker only for the Mold pair to raise their game and take the match by 21/13, 21/16.

Rossett A returned to winning ways with a convincing 8 - 0 win over Flint Phoenix B, which went some way to atoning for their 8-0 defeat in the hands of Flint Phoenix A the week before. Rossett’s Rachel Twiss and Toyoko Cornelius started proceedings at second ladies and won in three pulsating games against Jane Liddle and Holly Gill 21/19, 18/21, 21/17. That was as close as it got for Flint as the home team took no prisoners.

Mold B already look strong contenders for promotion from Division 2 and their 8-0 thrashing of Rossett B did their cause no harm. Rossett’s Hazel Davies and Rory Wilkinson came closest winning at third mixed when they took Joe Nesbitt and Lili Thomas to three games, long in rallies of the highest quality, before losing out by 21/18, 17/21, 17/21.

Rossett B then went on to redeem themselves somewhat, putting visitors Hawarden to the sword, when they cruised to a 7-1 win. Playing at second ladies Hawarden’s sole winners were Anna John and Lorna Kernahan who together played scintillating ladies doubles to see off Hazel Davies and Marie Jones in two games, 21/13, 22/20.

Unbeaten in Division 3, Prestatyn A continued their remorseless march towards promotion when they entertained Holywell B (two players short) and handed out a crushing 8-0 defeat. Match of the evening was at first mixed which saw Prestatyn’s Glyn Watson and Sonia Penlington easing their way to win a tight three game thriller against Elsie Gregory and George Hood by 17/21, 21/8, 21/18.

Again short of players Holywell B crashed to a 7-1 defeat away to the Llanferres C “Dream Team”. Holywell’s winners were at second mixed when the determined pairing of Linda Roberts and John Speed were too quick about the court for Gareth Davies and Moira Bonar and won a long but enjoyable three game match by 13/21, 21/15, 21/13.
