In Division1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, leaders Eros turned on the style and trounced visitors Llanferres A 8 – 0.
At second mixed, Jane Clough and Ant Welch came closest to claiming a win for Llanferres when they took Heather Astley and Will Toomey to three games; but despite their best efforts, eventually lost out 21/10, 18/21 and 21/10.
Still looking for their first win of the season, Mold B travelled to take on Denbigh A and rising to the occasion secured a respectable 4 – 4 draw, with just nine points separating the two teams. Match of the evening was at first ladies when Denbigh’s Beverley Dolman and Katie Owen faced Louise Nesbitt and Ruth Williams. Whilst the home pair took the first game 21/17, Nesbitt and Williams fought back in the second to level it 21/17. Scenting a win, the Mold duo upped the pace and playing some outstanding level doubles tactics in the decider took the game and the match by 21/15.
Buckley kept their promotion hopes from Division 2 on track with a sound 6 – 2 home win at the expense of rivals Llanferres B. Undefeated Dave Clough was player of the match for Llanferres and along with partner Peter Williams at first men’s gave a vintage display of men’s doubles to outsmart Nathan Barron and Greg Jones and win 21/19, 21/9.
Another club vying for promotion, Llangollen produced a disciplined performance to see off the challenge of Rossett B with a clear 6 – 2 win. At third mixed Rossett’s Andy Lloyd together with Marie Jones were involved in a three game thriller with Dave Edwards and Jo Drummett with Lloyd and Jones taking the first game 24/22. However in the second Edwards and Drummett dug in and aided by heavy smashes and sublime net play ran out comfortable 21/5 winners. With all to play for in the exciting third game the lead changed hands throughout and it was eventually Lloyd and Jones, making the least unforced errors, who triumphed by a close 22/20.
In Division 3, at home and fielding three reserves, Llanferres D put up a stiff resistance in their clash with visitors Holywell B but couldn’t prevent the visitors securing their first win of the season 5 – 3. Hannah Harrison starred for Llanferres and with partner Pauline Brooke-Rankin they made short work of Elsie Gregory and Chloe Jones, taking their match by 21/12 and 21/15. Making his competitive comeback for the home team, the wily John Uren, along with Marie Crawford out-manoeuvred Sonia Skates and Gil Ashworth in an enjoyable match, much appreciated by the spectators, to win by 21/16 and 21/17.
A lady player short, home team Flint Phoenix C were at a serious disadvantage to start with and additionally up against the talented youngsters in Mold C’s team. It was left to Flint’s first mixed pairing of Alfie Moorcroft and Catrin Travers to save their blushes and prevent the whitewash; and so they did in a determined performance up against Owain Sparrow and Elaine Pierce, running out 21/17, 12/21 and 21/19 winners.
