Last weekend saw the annual NEWBA Junior County Championships take place at Deeside Leisure Centre. Showcasing talent from across the region, this gives players the chance to prove themselves to be the best in North East Wales.
First up was the U17 Boys Singles. After strong group performances the semi finals were made up of Liam Hird (Mold) vs Tomos Tustain (Llanferres) and James Maddocks (Connah's Quay) vs William Winfield (Connah's Quay).
In the first of the semis, Tomos played some excellent badminton in the first game, but Liam showed his dominance to win the first set. In the second set Liam upped his game again taking the match 15/8, 15/1.
The second semi final was a one-sided affair with James showcasing his speed and strength winning 15/5, 15/0.
The final was hard fought by both players, involving many long, skillful rallies before Liam came through to beat James 15/8,15/13.
The U17s Girls Singles final consisted of Darci-Lee Martin (Connah's Quay) and Hannah Harrison (Llanferres). Friends and training partners off the court the pair provided an extremely entertaining match, with Darci shining through 15/8, 15/6 to take the title.
In the U17 Boys Doubles Liam Hird partnered up with his semi final opponent Tomos Tustain, who met James Maddocks and and his semi final opponent William Winfield. In a very evenly contested match, the boys produced the finest of doubles play in a thrilling 3 setter, with the honours going to Liam and Tomos 12/15, 15/3, 15/13.
In the U17 Mixed Doubles, Liam completed his hat-trick of titles when he paired up with Hannah Harrison beating James Maddocks and Aarthy Aravind (Connah's Quay) in the final, 14/15, 15/13, 15/14 in the match of the day where the result could have gone either way.
The U15 Boys Singles proved an exciting affair. The semi finals were contested by George Furnival (Mold) up against Harry Ledsham (Buckley) and Finley Jenkins (Flint) up against Ross Ruddock (Buckley).
Both semi finals were a close affair, but the chance to compete for the title went to George who won his match 15/10, 15/8 and Finley who won his match 15/7, 15/9.
In the final it was the more experienced Finley who had too much fire power and speed to win the final against George 15/7,15/9.
In the U15 Girls Singles Aarthy Aravind showed her class throughout the tournament and eventually overcame runner-up Garace Evans (Connah's Quay) 15/5, 15/7 to take the title.
Aarthy then went on to win the doubles with partner Sara Frulloni (Wrexham) to win an exciting 3 set final of the doubles 15/11, 8/15, 15/10 beating Grace Evans and Mahima Honsage (Wrexham).
Johan Varghese was the rising star in the U13 Boys Singles, retaining his title from last year beating runner up Arnav Ramavath 15/2, 15/6.
In the U13 Boys Doubles Johan and Arnav paired up to take the title, showing their strength and consistency to beat Cathal Johnson (Flint) and Jack James (Deeside) 15/11, 15/10.
We'd like to thank all the players and parents for their support in entering the tournament and we'd especially like to thank all the volunteers who made the tournament happen, without them events like these wouldn't be able to take place.
