Holywell Club enjoy local derby match with A team winning comfortably

In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, pacesetters Eros visited Deeside and came away victorious with a resounding 8 – 0 win. Only at second men’s did Deeside look likely to take an event when Steve Barlow and Luke McCarry fought hard, but were eventually defeated by the sheer speed and athleticism of Andy Gibbons and Alex Graham, who went on the win by 19/21, 21/10 and 21/16.

Llanferres A entertained Mold A and whilst they went down 6 – 2 they showed that their strength lies with their ladies who took both the level doubles events. Carys Jones starred for Llanferres and together with Jane Givelin were too quick about the court for Jess Ding and Emma Hilton, winning 21/18, 12/21 and 21/4.

Mold’s B team then went on to host Llanferres A but found the visitors in fine form and lost 1 – 7. Joe and Louise Nesbitt dug in at first mixed but were outclassed by the combined youth and experience of Tom Givelin and Claire Halestrap who went on the win by 21/17, 15/21 and 21/18.

Still with an eye on promotion from Division 2, Llangollen travelled to Hawarden and inflicted 6 – 2 defeat on the home team in what was a very close contest with four events going to the best of three games. Hawarden’s Tonicha Gibson and Kate Falk, playing at second ladies, played impressively to dispatch Zoe Pritchard and Viv Davies in a very competitive and close match by 17/21, 21/17 and 23/21.

Bottom of the division Llanferres C visited the seasiders Prestatyn A and were routed 7 – 1. At second men’s, the Llanferres pairing of Matthew Swash and Sam Smart were too smart for Bill Teece and Steve Hodgson, winning a tight match by 21/18 and 22/10.

Sitting on top of Division 3, Holywell A were “away” to their B team and whilst local derbies sometime throw up unexpected results this enjoyable evening’s badminton went according to expectations with A beating B 8 – 0. Sue Price and Linda Roberts were in scintillating form at second ladies and had too much know how for Hilary Roberts and Melinda Lyons, going on to win by a clear 21/6, 21/4.

Mold C’s mid-table clash with visitors Prestatyn B, went the way of the home team with a convincing 7 – 1 win. Undefeated Chris Preston was player of the match for Mold, and with partner Alex Mutch they took on Adrian Jones and Karen Brennan at fourth mixed. With the experienced Preston dictating play along with Brennan bossing the net, the Mold pair were always in control and cruised to a satisfying 21/11, 21/16 triumph.
