In Division 1 of the North East Wales Senior Badminton League, newly promoted Eros travelled to take on Denbigh A and after a very close match indeed, came away with a deserved 5 – 3 win. At first mixed the Eros pairing of Jamie Noble and Alex Goodwin played superbly to outclass Denbigh’s Iain Lovatt and the talented Beki Hutt by 21/17 and 21/5.
In a match separated by just two points, Mold A hung on to defeat visitors Llanferres A 5 – 3. First mixed provided the event of the evening in a three game thriller, which saw the young Mold partnership of Liam Hird and Jess Ding outlast the mother and son pairing of Jane and Tom Givelin, to win by 20/21, 22/20 and 21/14.
Home side Buckley A applied an 8 – 0 whitewash to Rossett B in their Division 2 match which was much closer than the score line would suggest. Rossett’s Andy Lloyd and Marie Jones came closest to winning for Rossett when they played some impressive badminton in the first game against Nathan Barron and Charlotte Ince only to lose out 21/14. However Lloyd and Jones upped their performance in the second taking it impressively 21/9. With the decider all to play for Barron and Ince fought back and in a game where the lead constantly changed hands they dug in and with fewer unforced errors, closed out the game and the match to win 22/20.
With both teams winning promotion last season it was the visitors Prestatyn A who showed Llanferres C who was the boss in an inspired 7 – 1 win. Moira Bonar starred for Llanferres in their only win, when, together with partner Gareth Davies, the fourth mixed duo gave a vintage display of doubles tactics, eventually outgunning Bill Teece and Ruth Salisbury 26/24 and 21/19.
Holywell A showed why they must be one of the favourites to gain promotion from Division 3 this season with a convincing win over guests Mold C. Marshalled by veteran Chris Preston, the well coached youngsters of Mold C found the experienced Holywell team a bit too hot to handle and went down 7 – 1. Preston, along with partner Chantal Font gave a battling performance at fourth mixed, but Peter White and Linda Roberts played doubles tactics of the highest quality and staying in charge throughout their match, went on to win by 21/14 and 21/13.
Prestatyn B entertained Denbigh B and in an extremely competitive match the outcome was a 4 – 4 draw with 8 points in Prestatyn’s favour. Match of the fixture was at first ladies where Prestatyn’s Heather Owen and Amy Roberts, in sparkling form, just edged out Helen Gardner and Bethan Sian by 21/13, 18/21 and 21/18.
