2020 saw the re-commencement of fixtures in Division 1 the North East Wales Badminton League, with Llanferres A losing out 6 – 2 to last season’s champions Flint Phoenix A. At second ladies, experience prevailed when the Llanferres pairing of Jane Givelin and Claire Halestrap recovered after losing the first game to the Moorcroft sisters Zoe and Tara by 12/21, to take the final two games and their match by 21/8 and 21/16.
The local Mold derby between their A and B teams went the way convincingly 8 – 0 in favour of the A listers. Match of the evening was at second mixed where the B’s Joe Nesbitt and Lili Thomas pushed the more illustrious A pairing of Debbie Walker and Tom Peace all the way before losing out by 23/21, 18/21 and 16/21.
Buckley’s quest for promotion from Division 2 stayed on course when they travelled to take on Rossett B and came away with a solid 6 – 2 win. Rossett’s Jane Liddle and Marie Jones dug in at first ladies and showing great determination, eventually got the better of Charlotte Ince and Helen Evans to take their excellent match by 19/21, 21/18 and 23/21. Without a point all season, Llanferres C’s 4 – 4 draw at home against Hawarden was a welcome move in the right direction. Undefeated Moira Bonar was player of the match for Llanferres and together with Welsh Junior International Matthew Swash they combined well at fourth mixed to outfox the father and daughter partnership of John and Tonicha Font, winning 21/19 and 21/12.
Currently lying in second place in Division 3 Connah’s Quay maintained their push for promotion with a tight 5 – 3 win away to Flint Phoenix C. At third mixed Jordan Donnelly and Gwenda Moorcroft starred for Phoenix when they took on the Quay’s talented pairing of Paul Tate and Sian Elias. This was a humdinger of a marathon match highlighted by long rallies and shrewd mixed tactical play, to the delight of the spectators. However holding their nerve in the deciding game Moorcroft and Donnelly played less unforced errors to just edge it, winning by 21/18, 20/22 and 28/26.
Holywell B continue to struggle and a lady short in their fixture against guests Denbigh B didn’t help their cause and they went down 7 – 1. Ollie Harrington was player of the match for Denbigh B and with Helen Gardner at first mixed they gave a disciplined performance to overcome Elsie Gregory and George Hood to take their match by 21/18 and 21/17. Playing at fourth mixed, Holywell B’s only winners were Melinda Lyons and John Speed who played impressively to upstage Alun Hughes and Bethan Sian, winning 21/16, 17/21 and 21/17.
