Flint Phoenix Rise to the Occasion to Thwart Mold


In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League the fight for second place between Rossett A and Mold A went 5-3 in favour of the visitors Mold.

Lily Hird was player of the match for Mold and in her match at second mixed alongside Jon Savory they triumphed over Simon Ellis and Nicola Smith winning by a comfortable 21/7, 21/14.


However Rossett A then went on to visit Flint Phoenix B and proving far too strong for the home team, trounced them 7-1. Flint’s only winners were at first mixed when Phil Roberts and Zoe Moorcroft recovered from the loss of their first game to stamp their authority on the match and producing some outstanding badminton ran out winners by 14/21, 21/18, 21/16.


Currently leading Division 2, Mold B travelled to Ruthin and handed out an 8-0 thrashing to Llanferres B. Duncan Church and Sue Clarke came closest to winning a match for Llanferres when they took Emma Hilton and Lloyd Tranter to three games before losing out by 21/18, 18/21, 16/21.


Llanferres B then had a home fixture against Holywell B and in a tight battle between these two bottom teams, with four matches going to the best of three games, got the better of their guests take the match 5-3. For Llanferres at third mixed, Peter Williams and June Lovell enjoyed success winning the first game 21/14 and then found themselves in a titanic battle with Eryl Hooson and Becky Saunders before edging out their opponents to take the long second game by 28/26.


Mold C entertained Flint Phoenix C in their Division 3 clash with the win going to Flint by a close 5-3. Event of the evening was at first mixed where player of the match for Mold, Dave Stretch, showed some sublime touches and accurate placements, to enable him and partner Sasha James to bounce back from losing the second game to take the decider in a 21/12, 10/21, 22/20 thriller.
