Another successful badminton season culminated in Teams representing Mold, Flint Phoenix and Denbigh Badminton Clubs battling their way through rounds of the Challenge Cup and Plate competition to face each other in the two Finals.
The Challenge Cup Final was between Mold C (+12) and League Champions Flint Phoenix A (-14). The late withdrawal of Mold’s top man proved something of a disadvantage for the team, but stepping late into the breach, Mal Davies starred, and partnered by Matthew Swash won both second men’s games against Dave Carnelly and Andy Gibbons by 21/11, 21/10. Although all games were very closely contested, the talent and overall power of Flint Phoenix prevailed with them running out 12-2 winners. Flint’s Carla White and Sammy Hutt were in fine form at first ladies and were too strong for Helena Warman and Pauline Matsko, going on to win by 21/17, 21/17.
The Challenge Cup Plate Final saw Denbigh A (-8) up against Flint Phoenix C (+8) with Denbigh winning 11-5. At first men’s, youth and experience combined for Flint in the form of Alfie Moorcroft and Dave Stretch, but they were unable to overcome the consistency of Iain Lovatt and Steve Aylott who went on to win 21/13, 21/19. However Moorcroft got his revenge when, partnered by Sasha James, they dug in and outlasted Steve Aylott and Beverley Dolman to win the second mixed match, convincingly, 21/20, 21/10.
