Denbigh’s Katie Owen and Wayne Cooper triumph in three game thriller.


In Division 1 of the North East Wales Badminton League, rejuvenated Denbigh A rose to the occasion and secured a surprise 5-3 win over second placed Rossett A. At third mixed for Denbigh, Katie Owen and Wayne Cooper were in fine form and in a three game thriller, consisting of long rallies and fluctuating leading positions, they outlasted Gareth Edwards and Rachel Twiss to take the match by 17/21, 21/19, 21/18.


Denbigh A then travelled to take on Llanferres A and again, belying there league position, dug in and showing a determined team spirit, took the match 5-3. Undefeated Andy Swash was player of the match for Llanferres and together with Sue Clarke at fourth mixed, they turned on a powerful display of mixed doubles tactics to outwit Jack Comey and Meinir Hughes to win by a comfortable 21/10, 21/17.


Division 2 leaders Mold B just managed to take the honours in their fixture against visitors Buckley by a close 5-3 with only four points separating the two teams. Undefeated Nathan Barron took the player of the match award for Buckley and with Greg Jones at second men’s they raised their game against Mold’s youthful pairing of Liam Hird and James Spendlove to win by 21/18, 18/21, 21/17.


The mid-table clash between Rossett B and Connah’s Quay went Rossett’s way when they demolished their visitors 7-1. The Quay’s only winners were Megan Rowland and Susan Chisholm who played impressive textbook ladies doubles to overcome the experienced duo of Hazel Davies and Toyoko Cornelius by 21/19, 21/16.


Prestatyn A were close to losing their undefeated record in Division 3 when they came up against second placed Llanferres B who took four events to the best of three games to force a

4-4 draw. Match of the evening was at fourth mixed which saw Prestatyn’s Paul Armstrong together with Claire Atmore involved in a titanic three game battle before going down to Sam Harrison and Pauline Brooke-Rankin by 17/21, 21/18, 25/23


Mold C’s promotion hopes were somewhat dashed when, a lady short, they could only force a

4-4 draw against visitors Prestatyn B. Match of the evening was at second mixed between Mold’s Pauline Matsko and Shamanth Moodalbyle who were up against Prestatyn’s Sarah Jane Wynne and Brandon Smith. Whilst Wynne and Smith took the first game 21/19, Matsko and Moodalbyle fought back in the second to win 21/14. The deciding game provided great entertainment for the spectators with some sublime touches, hard fought rallies and powerful smashes. However, with Matsko and Moodalbyle not being overawed by the occasion they took the game and the match by 23/21. A great advertisement for the game of badminton.
