Year 2019 has ended with the North East Wales Badminton League continuing to successfully coordinate their fixtures programme; with the three divisions starting to give some indication as to potential promotion and relegation issues.
In Division 1, after two successive promotions, Eros remain undefeated and well clear on 63 points followed by Denbigh A and Flint Phoenix A, both on 35 with Mold B adrift at the bottom with 13 points.
The mid-table clash between Rossett A and visitors Llanferres A resulted in an honourable 4 – 4 draw. Tomas Givelin and Claire Halestrap got matters off to a successful start for Llanferres when, at first mixed, they gave a masterclass of doubles tactics to outplay Gregg Hilditch and Sue lord to win by 21/15 and 21/14.
Top dogs Eros entertained Mold B and as expected won comfortably 6 – 2. However, in a long drawn out tussle at second men’s, Dan Roberts and undefeated player of the match for Mold, Lewis Cooke, had the staying power to eventually overcome Owain Astley and Andy Purshouse winning 24/26, 21/18 and 21/17.
Flint Phoenix B head Division 2 with 57 points closely followed by Buckley on 45 whilst Llanferres C languish on 9.
Rossett B travelled to the seaside to face Prestatyn A but found the home team in good form and with strength in depth they took the fixture 6 – 2. Match of the evening was at second mixed where Rossett’s experienced Jane Liddle, partnered by Neil Pritchard, were engaged in thrilling battle with Terry Wynne and Caitlin Dolan. Showing greater consistency in the last two games Liddle and Pritchard took the match 19/21, 21/13 and 21/15.
Holywell A and Connah’s Quay are neck and neck at the top of Division 3 each on 54 points with Holywell’s B team bottom on 12.
Whilst Llanferres D lost 2 – 6 to guests Denbigh B, the tense competition throughout the evening’s play was indicative of a match much closer than the final score suggests. Although on the losing side battling Andy Tustain was adjudged player of the match for Llanferres. Together with partner Marie Crawford at fourth mixed, they were up against against Denbigh’s longstanding star, Alun Hughes, accompanied by Annie Doyle. The experience of Hughes told in the end and combined with Doyle’s skilful net play they triumphed 21/19 and 21/16.
The handicaps of Eros (-2) up against visitors Holywell A (+3) did not auger well for a closely contested match and the 13 / 3 score in favour of Eros confirmed this view. With the Eros ladies in particularly dominating form Hana Terry and Sheila Palmer gave a vintage display of level doubles tactics when they out- manoeuvred Holywell’s Sue Price and Linda Roberts winning 21/11 and 21/14.
The next event is the Badminton Wales/North East Wales Senior Open to be held at Deeside Leisure Centre on Sunday 16 February 2020. Singles, Level Doubles and Mixed Doubles will be played.
