Our first Tournament of the season was held on the 11th November 2018. The Deeside Junior Silver Tournament is a singles only event and open to players in the U15, U17 and U19 age groups. With players coming from across North Wales and England, it promised to be a highly competitive event.
Up first was the U15 boys singles. Starting with the group stages, the players were battling it out for the top two spots in each group, which would secure a semi-final place in the tournament. First to make it through to the semis was Menai Bridge’s Eban Jones and Wrexham’s Max Thomas with the win going to Eban, in a hard fought match, 15-11, 15-7. The second semi comprised Nanditha Malagamuwa and Johan Varghese (Mold), which went Nanditha’s way beating Johan 15-8, 15-2. This meant Nanditha and Eban would battle it out for the title. Nanditha proved his worth beating Eban 15/7, 15/6, and didn’t drop a single game in the event.
Next up was the girls singles, which saw some new faces to the tournament scene entering from NEWBA. Grace Evans (Connah’s Quay) showed her class throughout, along with Georgia Turvey (Hereford) to play of for the title. After a very close match, it was Grace who edged out Georgia to claim the U15s Title, winning 6/15, 15/12, 15/12. In the U17 girls singles it was a straight contest between Hannah Harrison (Llanferres ) who took the Gold with Wrexham’s Fallon Roberts taking Silver (picture at the top of page).
The star of the U17 boys singles was Saahen Shetty (Wiltshire) who outclassed the competition in his group. Connah’s Quay’s James Maddocks was the convincing winner of the other group. In the semis Saahen beat Matthew Swash (Mold) 15/7, 15/9 and Isaac Loff (Great Orme) won a tense three setter against James 15/13, 13/15, 15/10. Saahen proved his stamina and consistency triumphing in the final 15-12, 15-13.
The U19 boys event was again dominated by Saahen who won the group undefeated. Max Stone (Connah’s Quay) took a creditable second place having won all his games until coming up against Saahen.
We would like to thank all the players and parents who attended the event and also give a special thanks to the organisers who provided an enjoyable and well run event.
