Christleton Hot on the Heels of the Junior League Top Teams

November 24th was the date of the 3rd round of the NEWBA Junior League. With all five divisions in play and the teams starting to finding their feet within the League, the matches held the promise of being very competitive affairs.

The first matches of the day were between Christleton C and Buckley B and Llanferres B and Wrexham C. It was a close affair between Christleton and Buckley, with Buckley winning the 4 games required to take the win 4-2. Although the scoreline of 4-0 to Llanferres over Wrexham looked an easy win, the games were very closely matched, but the ever improving Wrexham couldn't quite get to the finishing line after holding the lead in a couple of the games. After the jubilation of their win, Llanferres suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Christleton, whilst Wrexham were suffering another 4-0 defeat, this time the match was very one sided against a much stronger Buckley side. With the two wins under their belt, promotion was guaranteed for Buckley.

In division 4, it was third time lucky for Wrexham A in the battle for promotion. After finishing runner-up in the previous 2 rounds, Wrexham took their opportunity beating Flint A 6-0 and Connah's Quay D 5-1. The final match of the division was between Flint and Connah's Quay, where Flint took the win 4-2, but the result could have gone either way with only 2 points separating the teams.

Division 3 provided the most exciting contest of the day. With any of the 4 teams, Mold C, Christleton B, Deeside and Connah's Quay C, having the ability to gain promotion it was always going to be a nail biting affair. The tone was set early on, with Mold C and Christleton C taking their first matches 4-2 over Deeside and Connah's Quay C respectively. After the disappointment of the loss to Mold, Deeside showed their fighting spirit and defeated Connah's Quay 5-1. This meant the final match of the division, between Mold and Christleton, would be the promotion decider. The battle was on and with neither team wanting to miss out on promotion the match finished all square, which meant the result would go down on points, which went Mold's way with the higher difference.

Division 2 proved to be just as close, but at the wrong end of the division. Christleton A travelled with an extremely talented team and won both their matches 6-0 over Llanferres A and Buckley A. It was a closer affair between Flint A and Buckley A, with Buckley taking the match 4-2. With both Flint and Llanferres without a result, their final match was against each other and would decide who was going to remain in the division. There was nothing to separate the two teams throughout, what was, an extremely entertaining match and it was the same at the need with both teams taking 3 matches each. The closeness of the match was shown with Flint winning just 5 more points than Llanferres. This meant that Llanferres were the unfortunate team that were heading to Division 3.

Probably the most predictable of the divisions for this round, League leaders Mold A and their close rivals Connah's Quay A, were drawn to play the B teams from both clubs. With both the A teams beating Mold B and Connah's Quay B 6-0, the Division would be decided on points. Mold A extended their lead at the top of the division by conceding less points overall. The current status quo of Division 1 could easily be upset by a very impressive Christleton A in the next round, so it will be exciting to see how it all develops.

Round 4 of the Junior League is on the 15th of December 2018. Hope to see you all there!!!
