Chris and Joe Travers help Flint Phoenix whitewash Hawarden.

Division 1of the North East Wales Badminton League saw Deeside’s push to avoid relegation receive a serious setback when they were thrashed 8 – 0 at home by Llanferres A.

However the score line is deceptive in that five events went to the best of three games, an indication as to how close the match really was. At first men’s the Llanferres partnership of Tom Givelin and Figo Man just scraped home with a tight 21/12, 16/21 and 21/18 win over Gareth Burroughs and Mike Cain.

Mold A took the honours in a 5 – 3 home win against Rossett A with the young Mold pairing of Liam Hird and Jess Ding outstanding at first mixed, overpowering Simon Lane and Sue lord to win comfortably 21/17 and 21/10.

Llanferres B and C teams were involved in a local derby clash with the C/home team being comprehensively outplayed by their fellow club members, to give the B team a clear 8 – 0 win. Lara Griffiths and Pauline Brooke - Rankin came closest to taking an event for the C team when they played some classy badminton only for Sue Clarke and Hazel Hyslop to raise their performance and edge their match by 19/21, 21/13 and 21/19.

Leading Division 2,Flint Phoenix B cruised to another comprehensive win when they whitewashed home team Hawarden 8 – 0, with all events decided in just two games. Joint players of the match were the Phoenix father and son partnership of Chris and Joe Travers, who at second men’s played superbly to dominate their match and inflict a crushing 21/13, 21/4 defeat on Dave McGinlay and Mike Roberts.
