Rampant Rossett too good for Mold
Anchored at the bottom of Division 1, Mold B had the daunting task of travelling to take on Rossett A and found the home team in top form winning by a convincing 6 – 2. Match of the evening was at first mixed which saw Rossett’s Simon Lane and Sue Lord up against Henry Bohun and Trish Hird. Bohun and Hird took the first game 21/15 but Lane and Lord bounced back winning the second 21/18. With all to play for in the decider the lead changed hands several times in a game of skill and long rallies. However with less unforced errors Lane and Lord took the game and the match by a close 21/18.
Mold’s A team fared no better when they visited Flint Phoenix A and even with the inclusion of Welsh star Dan Font found the home team too hot to handle, going down 5 – 3. At first men’s Dan Font and Tom Sudder were in particularly devastating form for Mold and gave a two game drubbing to Ben Travers and Andy Gibbons, winning easily 21/7 and 21/8.
In Division 3 the festive spirit was not lost on Prestatyn B when they visited Llanferres C, but even in the season of goodwill they were not prepared to concede any events easily and eventually triumphed 6 – 2. Moira Bonar was player of the match for Llanferres and partnered by Lorna Allix they won their second ladies comfortably by beating Karen Brennan and Ruth Salisbury 21/18 and 21/13 in what was a well disciplined performance.
The Llanferres B team had greater success when playing their fixture at Holywell B coming away 7 – 1 winners. Holywell’s sole win was at fourth mixed when John Speed and Hilary Roberts outlasted Moira Bonar and Will Fellows to take their match by 21/14, 8/21 and 21/19.
Mold D may be struggling at the bottom of the division but the youngsters fought all the way in their match against guests Holywell B before losing 7 – 1 with five events going to the best of three games. Match of the evening was at second men’s when Callum Cahill and Will Casey took on Gil Ashworth and Paul Jones and playing superb badminton gained Mold’s only win by a tight 20/21, 21/19 and 21/19.
