Flint Phoenix A, current leaders in the North East Wales Badminton League, Divison1, continued their relentless quest to retain their title by whitewashing home team Deeside A 8 – 0. At second mixed only Daniel Taylor and Jill Povey look like winning an event for Deeside when they took Ben Travers and Tara Moorcroft to three pulsating games before losing out by 10/21, 23/21 and 16/21.

Sitting at the bottom of Division 1, Connah’s Quay and Mold B battled it out with the outcome being a fair 4 – 4 draw with just seven points separating the teams. Undefeated Mike Pritchard was player of the match for the Quay and in his first mixed with Cerys Brackenbury they outlasted Henry Bohun and Trish Hird taking a hard fought match by 22/20, 15/21 and 21/19

In Division 2 relegation threatened Holywell A entertained fellow strugglers Mold C and lost out to their visitors 5 – 3. Mold’s second men’s doubles pairing was a combination of youth and experience in the form of Dan Roberts and Chris Preston. They faced David Davies and John Speed in what was the deciding match of the evening. With Preston providing the guile and Roberts the power they celebrated a match winning performance taking their event by 22/20, 16/21 and 22/20.

Mold C then went on to visit Flint Phoenix B and found the home side much tougher opposition and lost out 7 – 1. Emma Dudley making her debut for Mold at fourth mixed with Shamanth Moodalbyle played well but the youthful duo were no match for the experienced pairing of the crafty Jane Liddle, who along with Chris Jones, went on to win comfortably, 21/7 and 21/16.

The Division 3 fixture between Prestatyn B and Denbigh B was a closely fought match which went down to the final event of the evening with Prestatyn’s Ian Watson and Chris Jones giving a vintage display of men’s doubles to outwit Chris Evans and veteran Alun Hughes in the final game, to win by 21/19, 19/21 and 21/16.

An experienced Llanferres B team and promotion contenders, proved much too strong for Mold D. Only Mold’s joint players of the match, Liam Hird and Helena Warman managed to go to three games when they extended the first mixed pairing of Mikey Parr and Sue Clarke before being edged out 21/17, 13/21 and 21/7.

In the Challenge Cup and Plate competition Prestatyn B found Llangollen in inspired form and despite putting up a battling performance were defeated 12 – 4. At first mixed for Llangollen, Nik Evans and Jane Jones were in sparkling form and comfortably dispatched Darren McGregor and Sarah Wynne  21/15 and 21/16.

Although a player short Flint Phoenix dug in and with excellent team spirit just took the match against Denbigh B by 9 – 7. Third mixed was the match of the evening when Geraint Duckfield and Gemma Browne just managed to get the better of Caeron Jones and Caroline Parry by 21/19 and 21/20.

Hawarden had mixed results in their Cup matches with their A Team (-1) losing to Mold D (+12) 10 -6. With two of their key players missing Hawarden A were always going to be up against it. However Louise Clothier and Diane Fardoe continued undefeated in all fixtures this season when, with a daunting handicap difference, they played superbly to defeat Eve Ellis and Pauline Matsko by 21/19 and 21/14, Hawarden’s B team (+3) were a player short so it is to their credit that they held visitors Prestatyn A (Scr) to an 8 – 8 draw with Prestatyn prevailing by twelve points.
