Mold C lose out to visitors Rossett B

Joe Nesbitt and Dan Roberts – Mold

There was a surprise result in Division 1 of the North East Wales Senior Badminton League when title holders Flint Phoenix A could only hold visitors Rossett A to a 4 – 4 draw.  Whilst the men’s doubles went the way of Flint, Rossett took the honours in both ladies doubles events. At second ladies for Rossett, Rachel Twiss and Danielle Schoneveld were in scintillating form and comfortably dispatched Holly Gill and Catrin James by 21/11, 21/14.

Mold B visited Deeside and despite a battling performance went down 6 – 2. Mold’s Emma Hilton and Elaine Pierce showed their staying power when they took on Rebeka and Allyson Wynn and in a tense three game thriller won by 21/18, 15/21 and 21/11.

Connah’s Quay entertained Mold A and found the visitors in an unforgiving mood and were soundly thrashed 8 – 0. Undefeated Jane Peace was player of the match for Mold and at second ladies, together with partner Lily Hird, they were just too good for Cerys Brackenbury and Ann Hipkiss winning convincingly by 21/14, 21/11.

In Division 2, Hawarden, strengthened by new team member, Louise Cothier closed out Holywell A with a 7 – 1 drubbing. Holywell’s only win of the evening was by that well matched pairing of Anne Booth and Iain Jones, at second mixed, when they edged out Diane Fardoe and Rob Jones by 22/20, 9/21 and 21/19.

Mold C were at home to Rossett B and found the visitors playing inspired badminton to take the fixture by 6 – 2. Mold’s winning combinations were both their men’s doubles and in particular at second men’s. Here youngster Shamanth Moodalbyle made his debut and under the guidance of captain Chris Preston they went on the defeat the more experience pairing of Dave Lovatt and Andy Lloyd by 22/20, 12/21 and21/11.

There was another narrow defeat for Mold D’s youngsters In Division 3 against an experienced Llanferres C team when they lost out 5- 3. Game of the night came at second mixed with Eve Ellis and Rees just pipping Moira Bonar and Andy Tustain in the third by 14/21, 21/16 and 21/19.

Newcomers to the League, Prestatyn B, travelled to take on Holywell B and secured a hard earned 4 – 4 draw with only fourteen points separating the two teams. Top match was at first ladies when Holywell’s Elsie Gregory and Linda Roberts faced Sonia Penlington and Madi Hebner. Gregory and Roberts took the first game by a close 22/20.  However Penlington and Hebner bounced back winning 21/16 in the second. With all to play for in the third the lead changed hands several times before Penlington and Hebner, with less unforced errors, closed out their match, winning 23/21.

It’s always an interesting fixture when teams from the same club come up against each other and yet there were no surprises when Llanferres B and C teams came face to face with the B team taking the honours 8 – 0. The nearest the C team got to winning was at first ladies with evergreen Jane Clough on her comeback and with partner Lis Cullen getting the better of Wendy Swash and Pauline Brooke – Rankin by 21/15, 18//21 and 21/13.
