Llanferres A find home team Denbigh A too strong and go down 5 – 3

Claire Halestrap Llanferres

The Division 1 fixture between Denbigh A and Llanferres A could almost have been a replay of the matches both teams engaged in prior to their promotion last season from the lower division. This time home team Denbigh A showed the way with a close 5 – 3 win.

Playing at second mixed for Llanferres, Claire Halestrap and Dave Markey showed their class, powering their way through their match against Katie Owen and Richard Elson to win by 21/15, 21/18.

Connah’s Quay A travelled to take on local rivals Flint Phoenix A and were duly thrashed 7 – 1. Cerys Brackenbury and Ann Hipkiss at second ladies were the Quay’s only winners when they engaged Jude Hughes and Nicola White in a three game thriller and with a show of superior speed about the court came out on top 10/21, 21/18, 21/16.

In the Division 2 clash between Rossett B and visitors Hawarden honours were shared in a 4 – 4 draw with Rossett taking the bragging rights by just two points. Undefeated Diane Fardoe was player of the match for Hawarden and together with partner Louise Cothier knew too much for Lisa Howe and Toyoko Cornelius and by playing outstanding badminton won by 21/18, 17/21, 21/12.

Eros have lost no time in stamping their class and authority on Division 3 and opponents can only look forward an early finish in their matches. And so it was when visitors Flint C played Eros at their venue in Buckley and were soundly whitewashed 8 – 0. Beth Higginson and Hannah Stephenson were in particularly devastating form at first ladies and crushed Catrin James and Sasha James 21/4, 21/4.

Holywell B and Denbigh B battled to attain supremacy on the night but the 4 – 4 draw was not secured by Holywell until completion of the second men’s doubles. Holywell’s Dave Davies and John Speed won the first game against Alun Hughes and Rob Taylor 21/15 but the Denbigh pair raised their game to take the second by 21/18. With all to play for in the final game Davies came into his own and with early interceptions of the shuttle and inspired smashes enabled him and partner Speed to dominate the final game, winning by 21/12 and so earning the draw.
