Flint Phoenix and Mold all even in Challenge Cup two match thriller
The North East Wales Badminton scene throws up some exciting matches and none more so than the Challenge Cup competition with its always interesting and sometimes controversial team handicapping results.
An under strenght Mold A (-14) found themselves up against feisty visitors Flint Phoenix C (+10) and were battered to a 3 -13 defeat. For Flint, ex, Mold player Catrin James was in good form and together with partner Sasha James put Debbie Walker and Lily Hird to the sword, at first ladies, with a convincing 21/0 and 21/5 victory.
With the advantage of a home venue, Mold’s C (+6) team fared somewhat better against the more experienced Flint Phoenix B (-2) team. This truly competitive match ended in an 8 – 8 draw with Mold just edging the win by 302 points to 268. Great handicapping! At first mixed Joe Nesbitt and Lili Thomas accumulated important points for Mold when sharing the spoils with Alex Graham and Nicola White 19/21 and 21/1.
Prestatyn A (+8) travelled to their fixture with Mold B (-4) and in a very tight match, with closely contested matches, just lost out 7 – 9. Prestatyn’s men showed their strength in depth taking both their doubles events. At second men’s Prestatyn’s Steve Hodgson and Paul Armstrong played impressive doubles tactics to comfortably overcome Lloyd Tranter and Dave Sumner by 21/8 and 21/17.
Holywell A (-2) were another club to visit and take on a Mold team; this occasion being Mold D (+12). With the home side short of a lady player they were always up against it and so it proved with Holywell digging in to come away with a 9 -7 victory. Event of the evening was at third mixed which saw Mold’s Alex Much and player of the match, Will Casey, up against Helen Ashworth and Peter White. With the handicapping committee getting it right, the match was long on rallies and with the pairs evenly matched the standard of play was outstanding, with Ashworth and White just taking the games by 21/20 and 21/20.
The next Senior event is at Deeside Leisure Centre on the 18 February 2018 and is the NEWBA Badminton Wales Senior Gold event and entry information can be accessed from Club Secretaries from the NEWBA website – newba.org.uk
