Flint Phoenix A prove too strong for Mold A

Although home team Mold A had Welsh number one player, Dan Font playing for them, they found Division 1 champions Flint Phoenix A just too strong for them and were beaten 5 – 3.  Match of the evening was at first men’s when Font and partner Jon Savory took on Cheshire star Matt Sprake together with the talented Joe Travers. In a thrilling three game event Font and Savory took the first game 21/16 with Sprake and Travers bouncing back to take the second by a close 23/21. Font and Savory then stepped up a gear and with tight net play and powerful smashing eased their way to win the final game by 21/10.

Mold A then went on to visit Rossett A and came away with a deserved 6 – 2 win. However the ladies of Rossett showed the men how to win, taking both ladies doubles. Rossett’s Nicola Smith and Rachel Twiss played a shrewd tactical game at first ladies to secure a fine win over Siobhan Cowling and Hayley Overmire by 21/15, 21/19.

In Division 2 Hawarden entertained Mold C and outgunned the visitors 6 – 2. First men’s doubles provided great entertainment, with youth in the form of Mold’s Joe Lewis and Joe Nesbitt, outlasting Jake Pyke – Jones and Rob Jones to take their marathon match by 21/10, 21/23, 26/24.

Holywell B visited Llanferres C in their Division 3 fixture and in a battling performance secured a 4 – 4 draw with just five points separating the teams in Holywell’s favour. The young Llanferres pairing of Sam Harrison and Adam Griffiths played exceptionally well against the more experienced Paul Jones and Gil Ashworth and playing a fast attacking format won by 21/16, 17/21, 21/12.

Another 4 – 4 draw occurred when Holywell B and lady short, played visitors Flint Phoenix C. Linda Roberts was player of the match for Holywell and together with George Hood won the first game against Chris Travers and Catrin James easily 21/6. The Phoenix pair provided tougher proposition in the second with the game however ending up 24/22 in Roberts and Hood’s favour.

Visitors Prestatyn B received an 8 – 0 whitewash from Denbigh B with Ian Hughes and Sonia Penlington coming nearest to a win for Prestatyn. Playing at first mixed Hughes and Penlington were up against Deri Cottle and Lliwen Jones and in a three game cliff-hanger lost out by 21/19, 14/21, 19/21
