Close win for Connah’s Quay over Denbigh A

The League Tables show Flint Phoenix A setting the pace in Division 1 eight points ahead of Mold A who have a game in hand. Llanferres A and Connah’s Quay languish at the bottom with five and three point respectively.

Katie Owen and Helen Evans starred for Denbigh A in their club’s battle with visitors Connah’s Quay but could not save them from losing the match 5 – 3. Playing at first ladies, Owen and Evans gave a disciplined doubles performance to enhance their reputation by clinically dispatching Sue Chisholm and Alison Oates in two games, 21/10, and 21/16.

Connah’s Quay took on local rivals Flint Phoenix A and found the home team with its all round strength too hot to handle and went down 7 – 1. The Quay’s only winners were at second ladies where Cerys Brackenbury and Ann Hipkiss gave a dazzling display of doubles tactics, out-manoeuvring Judith Hughes and Nicola White, to win by 10/21, 21/18 and 21/16.

Yo-yo team Llanferres A entertained Rossett A and found the visitors in an unforgiving mood and lost 5 – 3. Match of the evening was at fourth mixed which saw the home team’s pairing of Jane Givelin and Peter Williams up against Rossett’s Danielle Schoneveld and Adam Smith. Givelin and Williams took the first 21/14 but Schoneveld and Smith dug in and fought back in the second to take it by a close 22/20. In the third game the evenly matched pairs played some breathtaking badminton with the lead changing hands several times. However with the game at 23/22 in favour of Schoneveld and Smith they held their nerve to wrap up the decider and their match by 24/22.

Rossett B lead Division 2 some eleven point ahead of second placed Buckley who have two games in hand. Propping up the Division is Mold C followed at the bottom by Holywell A.

In Division 3 Eros with their team of talented and accomplished players top Division 3 and look unlikely to face defeat throughout the season. In second place comes Denbigh B with Flint Phoenix C and Prestatyn A vying for bottom place.

Prestatyn had an interesting match night when their A and B teams clashed with the A team prevailing 6 -2. Glyn Watson and Sonia Pennington were joint players of the match for their sterling performance playing for the B team at first mixed. Here they faced the club’s number one mixed pairing of Steffan Jones and Caitlin Dolan who won the first game 21/17. Watson and Pennington changed tactics in the second game and with less lifting and tighter net play outgunned Jones and Dolan to win by 21/19.  With little to choose between the two pairs the match went down to the wire and with Watson and Pennington making less unforced errors they prevailed by 24/22 to clinch the match.

Holywell B hosted Eros and despite putting up a battling performance lost by 8 – 0. At fourth mixed Linda Roberts and Jack Lancelott scored most points for a Holywell pairing when they lost to Sandra Parry and Jamie Noble by 21/12 and 21/7. The home club reported that ”it was a real Halloween nightmare for Holywell who were completely overwhelmed, losing 8 -0 (16 games to 0 and 336 points to 103)”

Home team Llanferres B proved too strong for Flint Phoenix C winning by a comfortable 6 – 2. Gordon Donnelly was player of the match for Phoenix and at first men’s with the wily Chris Travers they accounted for Mikey Parr and Will Fellows by 21/19 and 21/18.

Mold D (+12) had enough of a handicap to see off Hawarden A (-1) by 10 – 6 with Alex Much and Callum Cahill  outlasting 77 years of age Roy Thompson and Alison Hulley to win by 21/9 and 21/13.
