In the final of the Men’s Doubles Daniel Roberts and Ben Travers were involved in a three game thriller with Peter Walker and Jonathan Savory before coming out on top by 21-18, 19 – 21 and 21 -17. In the Ladies Doubles Karyn Jackson and Vicki Jones raised theirgame in the third, to overcome Katie Roberts and Laura Parry 21 –10, 13 -21 and 21 -17. The last final of the day saw player of the tournament Ben Travers and partner Katie Roberts going down 21 -16 and 21 – 18 to the talented pairing of Jonathan Savory and Jane Peace. Read more
The Deeside Junior Open also attracted players from around the UK but the north east Wales players were dominant.n the U13 boys singles Jamie Noble (Flint) had a great win in the quarters beating Cheshire’s Owen Edwards 12-15, 15-12, 15-3 but Mold’s Dhruv Bansal proved too strong in the semis beating him 15-6, 15-13. Despite raising his game Bansal lost the pulsating final 10-15, 15-13, 8-15 to Gwent’s James Morris. Bansal partnered Edwards in the final of the doubles to beat Noble and Morris. Read more
Ruthin A get out of jail
In the Challenge Cup competition nothing stirs the blood like a match between teams from the same club, particularly if one of the teams “borrows” a player from the other team. In this case it was Ruthin B (+12) up against Ruthin A (-1). The handicappers got this one just about right and although the A team came out winners by 12 games to 2, the match was a tightly fought event with only19 points separating the teams at the conclusion. The best seat in the house and a very interesting career but it all happened to late for me to become an International Umpire. As I was a player and had no time for anything else I never even considered becoming an official. I was playing for two clubs never thought I would stop playing so young, but my life changed when I had to go for hip replacements.
