On Tuesday 23rd April for 2 hours Holywell Badminton Club trialed a different way of organising a badminton competition. During my league matches since Christmas I mentioned the competition to clubs to see if there was interest in sending a couple of 3rd/lower 2nd division pairs to join with Holywell’s 2nd team players and 1st team playing with non league club members. The League’s outstanding side, Airbus, clinched the Division 1 title and in their final fixture cruised to a comprehensive 7 – 1 win over visitors Ruthin A. Only one match went to three games and that was at first ladies where Ellen Liddle and Kim Rogers outplayed Fiona Reid and Heather Astley 21/8, 17/21 and 21/13. Relegation candidates Llanferres A were whitewashed 8 – 0 by a Deeside team in top form. Read more

This weekend saw the 2013 Yonex Junior National Championships take place, with a number of NEWBA players making the journey down to Cardiff, looking to put in good performances.
The first day of play saw the U11s, U15s and U19s age groups gunning for titles in the singles, doubles and mixed events and the day proved an unbelievably successful one for NEWBA players with all our players reaching the latter stages in at least one of their events, and 5 titles coming back to the North East. Airbus maintain their position at the head of Division 1 and look odds on to take the title this season. The improved form of Northop continues with a close 5 – 3 win over Mold A. Extra coaching for Jane Peace is paying off and although losing both her events was judged player of the match for her determined and skilful display. Read more
There was a small entry; it was disappointing that a lot of junior clubs were not represented but the standard was high. In the U11 boys singles Michael Pritchard (CQ) captured his first singles title beating Tom Lancely (Mold) 15-7,15-12 in an exciting contest. In the girls singles Buckley’s Ffion Cooper continued her marked improvement before losing a very close match against Lauren Evans 15-13,13-15,14-15. Mold’s Lili Thomas won the title beating Evans 15-8,15-13. Pritchard and Thomas won the mixed beating Lancely and Cooper 15-10,15-7. Read more
