Tournaments are a great way to play competitive badminton in every discipline. As well as being a great way to motivate players to train hard to gain greater success, they are also a wonderful way of meeting new people and seeing new places. Tournament results are also used as part of the process when selecting players for County and National teams.
Because of their importance in a player’s development, NEWBA encourages and recommends that all players (but especially those in our Academy Coaching squads) who wish to reach their maximum potential compete in tournaments throughout the season.
NEWBA, Badminton Wales and Badminton England hold a number of tournaments throughout the season to give players the opportunity to compete at a level that suits their ability.
The tournaments comprise:
NEWBA Junior restricted tournament
Restricted to players who are eligible to represent NEWBA ( by birth, education, residence). All squad players are expected to enter.
BW Junior Bronze (formerly Junior Shuttle)
This is aimed at players from beginner to intermediate standard in our junior clubs. There are currently 5 such tournaments across Wales.
BW Silver. This is a new tournament which is aimed at players below Gold standard.
This will be in singles only and all players end up playing the same number of matches as each other and in a group of equal ability. 3 are planned for this season.
BW Gold (formerly Junior Open)
This is aimed at the best in Wales and attracts players from anywhere in the UK. There are currently 5 such tournaments across Wales.
Badminton England Junior tournaments. These are played at U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19. The levels are Gold, Silver and Bronze. All tournaments are open to any player providing that their grading is not above that allowed for that tournament.
Yonex Welsh Junior National Championships.
These are held in March each year and open to any player who satisfies the qualification criteria.
BW Tournaments can now only be entered online. The conditions and entry forms can be accessed via the links in the calendar above or via www.badmintonwales.com
Parents – if you do not use the internet for online banking – please complete the entry online and send a cheque in the post for the tournament secretary to enter it.
Club secretaries – if you have a player whose parents do not have a computer or an email address then please complete the entry yourself or send the entry to the tournament secretary who will enter it. We don’t want a player to miss out on a tournament because of the lack of the technology.
